I Need Enlightenment: What does "Warm" and "Cool" mean???

Hi All,

So, I've been beauty blogging for a little over 2 years now and been watching YT videos on beauty and skincare for more than 3 years now and I still don't get it.

What does "Warm" and "Cool" mean in terms of beauty, makeup and skincare?

I was just watching a new video from FashionIsMyCrush and she said something about cool skin-toned people being NW### and warm skin-toned people being NC###.  I thought the "W" and "C" in the MAC foundation numbers meant "Warm" and "Cool".

How can you tell if you're "Warm" or "Cool"?

Bubzbeauty explained in one of her videos that you can find out if you're warm or cool toned if you look at the veins on your wrist.  Green means one thing, and blue means another.  I don't remember which and to me, green and blue are very subjective.  I can't tell what I am.

I'm confused.  Can someone please enlighten me?

I would really appreciate it!  Thanks for stopping by and thanks in advance for your help!

UPDATE:
Thank you everyone who stopped by and posted an answer to these couple of questions.  I feel so much better knowing that there are people who do have the answers to these questions and are so willing to share their/your knowledge.  So thank you again for enlightening me on this subject!  I hope the answers here were also able to help out those who had these same questions.  Thank you, Beauty Community!  :-)

OMG I was just reading up on this the other day!! Someone asked on MakeupAlley and this link was posted to a blog: http://musicalhouses.blogspot.com/2010/01/undertones-for-asians-how-to-tell-if.html

Forewarning: it's a really long post, but super helpful and informative.

Even if someone isn't Asian it seems to be really helpful. But I'm Korean so I feel like I've a much better understanding of my skintone...which after reading her post made me realize it's a lot more complicated than just that I'm yellow, or warm or cool. The only place she kinda lost me was when she started going into all the picture comparisons - I didn't always see what she was describing.

Anyway hope it helps! :-)

I THINK (LOL) NC means "Neutral Cool" and NW means "Neutral Warm"

NC girls are the yellow based ones while NW is pink. I find it frustrating though since I'm literally between the two and am neutral. I go for yellow though as I feel if it is more pink it makes me look ruddy or doesn't quite match my neck.

Thank you ladies for helping me out with this! I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who, 3 years into this, didn't know what was what. haha

I'm still a little unclear about the many possible combinations of skintones and undertones and seasonal differences but that's okay. This, at least, is a step in the right direction! ^_^

Thanks again, ladies!

MAC does their Warm and Cool terms differently.

If you're NC, you're actually warm-toned. It means 'not cool' or 'need cool' to even out your complexion. Same for NW - cool toned - 'not warm' or 'need warm.'

Hi kusanagi, I just wanted to say thank you for the lwoderful comment you left on my page. I wasn't exactly feeling down but whatever I was feeling...your comment really cheered me up. Part of my post was because of frustration with my bf. We're at that stage in our relationship where there is pressure for us to get married. I'll stop myself before I get my personal business all posted on your blog. But thank you. That really was sweet :)

I'm glad you found your happiness at the right time! <333
